The High School Marching Band combines the musicality of a concert band, the precision of marching, the beauty of choreography and dance, the fire of percussion and the pageantry of the football season to create a truly unique and special activity. Modern marching band shows are intense, athletic, and skillful. Weekly rehearsals begin in May to familiarize students with the music. Band camp begins in early August, and the marching season runs through November. The band performs at 5 to 6 weekend competitions, all home and away football games, and parades. This award-winning ensemble was most recently awarded the Cavalcade of Bands 2021 American Open Class Championship.
Color Guard is a combination of the use of flags, mock rifles, and other equipment as well as dance and other interpretive/expressive movement. Costumes and props are used to create a theatrical presentation. Guard is an essential element to the marching band program. The Color Guard performs with the Marching Band at all events.
The Concert Band is another outstanding performance ensemble designed to give students an enriching and diverse instrumental music education. The objective is to foster and promote musical growth through the playing of an instrument. Concert Band is a skilled effort in which each student is expected to show technical and musical growth. The Concert Band performs at 2 concerts per year and at graduation ceremonies.
The band is a jazz ensemble, which resembles groups of size and style of the Swing Era. The 19-piece band includes a vocalist and performs a variety of music, going back from 1935 to present. It is common to hear groups of this setup play music from Glen Miller to Gordon Goodwin, including vocalists from Ella Fitzgerald to Mariah Carey. This band performs for holiday tree lightings, school concerts, jazz festivals, community events and our very own swing dance.
This group performs for home basketball games – typically 5 per year – for the purpose of entertaining and creating enthusiasm. This group is open to all members of the band.
This ensemble performs with only percussion instruments and synthesizers. Visual performance techniques, marching, moving and dynamic music are utilized. Costumes and props are used to create a theatrical presentation. This ensemble is for percussionists and for those students who are interested in learning to play a percussion instrument. The season begins at the conclusion of Marching Band and continues until the end of March. The Drumline performs at 5 to 6 competitions in the KIDA marching circuit. Membership is not restricted to students who are enrolled in a music course and is open to students in grades 7-12.
