Nov. 3, 2008

Secretary’s Report   Minutes from October meeting approved.

Treasurer’s Report   Detailed report attached.  There is  $ 7,051.42 in the student account and $5,924.96 in the general fund (when Disney deposits are subtracted).

Director’s Report

§  We won 2^nd place in the Liberty division, Cavalcade of Bands, at Red Lion.  We were disappointed that there wasn’t a percussion award.  We’ve gone from a score of 73 to a score of 94—we stand a chance of winning “Most Improved” at championships in Hershey.  This is especially good considering that we are a very small band for our class.  Warwick is only 1 student under the upper limit—they are 20+ people larger than us.

§  There are 2 parts to the judging: composition of the show and performance of the show.  Composition scores tend to go up as the season progresses.

§  Meeting attendees   had the opportunity to listen to some judges’ tapes.  Some key phrases we enjoyed:  “Props are Beautiful!”   and “Lots of props…….beautiful overlay of the field.”   Mr. Poole would like to thank everyone who helped in any way with the props.  They create a “stage” for us; they frame us on the field so we don’t look so small on such a big field.

§  Thursday, Nov. 6: “Send-Off” Performance for parents @ 8:30.

Photographer:  Janice has been doing a great job for us this year.  She has learned a lot about videography and she has enjoyed doing it. Thank you, Janice!

Fundraising 

• Poinsettias:   Olp’s gave us the best price last year and the quality was very good. Everybody’s prices will be going up this year. We can check others, but Debbie Auberger doubts we will find a better deal. Olp allows us to have 3 delivery dates, most do not.  He needs the orders by 11/24.  We will plan to have 2 delivery dates: Black Friday (11/28) and one other. Order forms will be distributed on Thursday at the send-off performance, orders due back by 11/18.
• Market Day  Next  pick-up 11/4, next order due around Thanksgiving, pick-up will be 12/2.

Trip 

• A HUGE THANK YOU GOES OUT TO DONNA SCHRIVER   for all the work she’s doing for the trip.  The mailing was great.  Thank you Donna!
• It’s time to get the Disney tickets and Kennedy Space Center tickets ordered.
• Final hotel room list is due 12/5.  Students will be allowed to choose their roommates—sign up sheet will be in the band room soon.
• Final payment to the bus company due 12/12.
• It might be helpful to check web sites other than Disney to get an idea of food prices in the parks.  Perhaps AAA would be helpful.
• Students will have a shirt-design contest: winner earns   25 Disney dollars.
• The marching band will have to rehearse after marching season and before the trip to learn the parade tunes.

Championships    USSBA   We will perform at 5:28 on Friday in Annapolis.  Donna Schriver will forward the information to Louie.  The band will have a cook-out tailgate party in the parking lot.  Kim Nace is going to check into getting championship apparel.

End-of-season marching band party   Sunday, Nov. 16, 5-8pm, Springfield Bowling.  The party is free to all marching students, staff and pit crew.  No friends can be invited. We will need baked goods and door prizes.  If you can help with either of these (or both!), please contact Bethany Meyer.   Door prize donations (ideas: gift cards—Starbuck’s, video store, I-tunes, fast food—any small gift that teenagers might like—be imaginative!)  can be dropped in the red box or given to Bethany. If you let Bethany know what you’re bringing, you can just bring it to the party if that is easier for you.

Student Input   Band students: we are here for you.  We would love to have your input at every meeting.  Thank you to those of you who came tonight.  Brandon suggested burgers in pizza sauce as a future band competition day meal.  Ashley agreed that it would be a good idea to have students design the trip shirts. Lorraine was a little short on words tonight, but that’s ok—we still like to have students here.

Concerts 

•  Dec. 21   SHS jazz band/chorus/orchestra       Refreshments have been provided by the orchestra in the past.
•  Dec. 18  SMS band/jazz band       We will provide refreshments for this.

Indoor Drum Line/Guard 

• We will compete in the KIDA circuit.
• The drum line will compete in 4 competitions + championships.
• The guard will compete in more than 4 competitions + championships.
• The shows are in Feb. and March on Saturdays.  They are not too far away.
• We already have practice times for the guard booked.
• We need some sort of heavy-duty push cart to transport the guard floor.
• SMS students are invited to join these 2 groups.  SHS students will do an assembly at SMS to recruit.
• Idea:  video “commercial” to play during SMS morning announcements.

Jazz Fest   April 4, 2009

• Facility reserved.
• Invitations almost ready to be mailed.
• WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!  We are looking for volunteers to lighten the load for everyone.  We need people to plan, take care of tickets, get advertising, decorate, work in the kitchen, etc.  We have a lot of small jobs—please considering helping.  If you are interested in helping, please contact Lynne Hood or call 2350104.
• Bonny Lutter has volunteered, once again, to work on getting advertising.  As her son is graduating, this would be a good year for someone to shadow her and learn the job.

Storage   We will need the trailers for Jazz Fest and indoor drum line and guard; therefore we will need some storage space for props, etc. during Feb. and March.  Bonny Lutter has a contact she will check with—perhaps we could swap storage for advertising.

Next meeting:  Mon, Dec. 8, 7pm in the SHS band room.  All are welcome, especially students.
