Director’s Report
- Jazz Band to perform at 8th grade
curriculum night, boosters will have a table set up, video playing.
- The 1st meeting for 8th grade incoming
marching members is scheduled for Tues. April 27. Hopefully we can announce
next year’s trip, marching show theme, etc. Drum majors and a few band
members have already spoken to middle schoolers and gotten some positive
feedback. Drew Slattery is putting together an 8th grade
recruitment video which will be sent to every 8th grade band
family. Thank you, Drew! We still need informal, out-of-uniform
pictures of band camp, rehearsals, bus trips, etc. If you have any please
send them to Mr. Poole @
Christian.poole@sycsd.org We will contact middle schoolers several
times between now and April 27.
- Indoor guard had an amazing show on Sat. evening at
Littlestown. Come out and see them at Cedar Cliff HS and Mechanicsburg on
Sat.
- Mr. Helmeczi agreed to allow middle schoolers to see
the indoor drum line and guard show during an advisory period soon. The drum
line show is coming along—it is very different and unusual this year. We
will try to have a nighttime show for family and friends just before
championships. Indoor Guard and drum line are the best-kept secrets in the
district!
- Symphonic band is getting a new challenging piece of
music for the spring concert. We will feature some of the musicians who
missed their chance to perform at the concerto, which was cancelled.
Old Business
- KIDA (Keystone Indoor Drill Association) show:
Our original show was cancelled due to weather. We have an opportunity for
another one, but it could be an expensive, small show, so at this point we
do not plan to move forward with it.
- Pellman’s Cakes and Pies Brochures will be
given to the students on Wed, orders due by 3/22, delivery 3/31 at
SHS after school until 4:00. Cheryl Dunkin-Yost is chairing this
sale. Thank you, Cheryl! Bethany mentioned that we always have teachers who
complain that they missed the sale. Be sure to remind your band students to
ask their teachers if they are interested. People like Pellman’s!
These are good for Easter. This fundraiser is available to guard members and
drum line as well as all band members. We will order enough for Jazz Fest,
Cheryl will take care of storage.
- End-of-year-banquet: committee to meet soon.
- Elections: A slate of officers will be
presented at the April meeting. Cheryl and Tina are in the process of
finding out who wants to stay, who would like a different position, etc.
Election will be held at the May meeting. Please let Cheryl Dunkin-Yost or
Tina Pelensky know if you are interested in a position.
- Jazz Fest (Calypso Café)
- Decorating/Advertising: The fliers are ready to
be distributed—the logo looks awesome—thank you to Nick Voltaggio for
donating his time and talent. T-shirts and program are in progress.
Donna Schriver will be the point person for printing tickets and the
program. Order forms for parents and others who would like Calypso Café
t-shirts will be forthcoming. Tina is the point person for ad sales. We
have several students lined up to help with ad sales. Donette will
advertise to all district employees, Tina will work with Terry Reuter on
getting the event on the district web site. Deb Auberger offered to help
with the senior posters.
- Tablecloths have been ordered.
- M.C: Brody Dunkin has offered to help with this.
Cheryl will talk to Brody about getting some friends to help.
- Food: The menu is coming together—food committee
will take care of menus, preparing servers, etc. They will also take
care of providing food on Fri. evening for set-up, and water bottles for
all performers.
- Food tickets: Angela and Tammy will get together
with Donna to fine-tune this process.
- Event tickets are available by calling or mailing
order form to Lynn Eason. She and Beth Bond will handle ticket sales and
make table tents.
- Lobby Music: Mr. Poole will arrange a percussion
quartet or something similar to play softly in the lobby.
- Adjudicators: Curt Sipe and Jeff Stabley,
clinician: Steve Fieldhouse.
- Art Auction: Megan Strott will communicate to Mr.
Bowers that if art students earn money on their art they can keep the
full amount.
- Directors: Lynne Hood will continue to
communicate with the directors to coordinate arrival times, ticket
sales, etc.
- Adjudicator kits: Jill and Jere Sechrist will
assemble and have ready for 4/10/10.
New Business
- Elementary School level Jazz Clinic Nancy
Slattery has raised the idea of extending the jazz clinic down to the
elementary level. Please let Tina know if you’d like to help
with this project. (tpelensky@earthlink.net) Curt Sipe
of Inspire Studios in Jacobus would be the clinician. There is a push to get
more of our younger students into private lessons. Curt is willing to give
us a free clinic in return for advertising his music business. This seems to
be a mutually beneficial venture. Great idea, Nancy!
- Band trip We have a small committee which is
starting to research a marching band trip for 2011. Disney will be rotated
in once every 4 years. Typically there is a trip every other year.
- Market Day orders due Wed, March 3, pick up
Tues, March 9th at SMS. This is a convenient and easy
fundraiser—if you haven’t used it yet, why not start now?
Next meeting: Mon, April 5 at 7:00pm in the high
school band room. All band students and parents are welcome and encouraged to
attend.
