 Band Booster Meeting

February 9, 2009

Secretary’s Report   Minutes from January meeting approved with one correction. (501c3) Correction has been made.

Director’s Report 

• Mr. Poole thanked the boosters for the reception after last week’s concert.
• District/Regional band   We are very proud of all of our district and regional band students. We are sending 5 students to district jazz band—more than last year. We have 3 going to regional band and we are hoping to send 1, 2 or all 3 of them to states. The regional band performance will be at E. Stroudsburg High School on March 7.
• Small Ensemble Concert   Tuesday, April 21, 7pm or 7:30 pm   (Details forthcoming) This performance is intended to showcase small ensembles and soloists.  Mr. Poole is hoping to inspire more students to take lessons.
• Indoor Guard/Drum Line   The indoor groups are up and running. The indoor guard is already competing, the drum line will compete for the first time on Sat, Feb.21. Both groups are practicing hard and both shows look very good. On 2/21 we will take 2 busses to Green Castle because it will be a very long day. All of this info is available at www.warriorbands.org 
• Practice schedule:  Tues. evening pit orchestra, Wed. evening drum line, Thurs. evening jazz band.

Fundraising

• Basket/Bag Bingo   Approximately 175 people attended.  There were about 120 tickets sold by students, so that’s over $700.00 into student accounts. All of the receipts are not in yet, but so far we know we earned $375 on small games and $256 on the 50/50 raffle. It was a nice day-the food was good, the prizes were nice, it was very-well organized and a good time was had by all.

• We would like to see more student involvement in the planning and implementation of fundraisers—we are raising funds for them.
• Might we want to do another raffle at Jazz Fest? We do have the license.

• Pellman’s Cakes and Pies   This sale will start in early March, products to be delivered in time for Easter.

• The subject of student involvement was raised again.  Ideas:

ü   Give section leaders sign-up sheets and the responsibility to get the students in their sections involved. 

ü  Stand in front of Wal-Mart to advertise bingo and other events, possibly collect donations.

ü  Advertise bingo at the Lutheran Home and arrange for residents to be transported.

ü  Do Pellman’s sale in conjunction with the orchestra.  Donna Schriver will contact Mr. Levi about this.

ü  Remember that we live in a small community and many of our band members also have to raise funds for church groups, scouts, sports, etc. Families are hit over and over—let’s reach out to the community, alumni, etc.

• Market Day   Next order date:  March 6 with delivery the following Tues.  Debbie Auberger offered to stay on as our Market Day chairperson next year. Please remember to participate in this ongoing, easy fundraiser. The process is easy and the food is good.

Indoor Drum Line/Guard

• Indoor Guard  They’re already competing.  They’ve been practicing a lot; sometimes 9-9 on Sat. Parents have been providing food.  The show has a Beatles theme. Just like TV, the show starts in black and white and progresses to color. They are competing in the KIDA bronze division and we expect them to be very competitive.
•  Drum Line  The show is still coming together.  The show, titled “Conspiracy,” was written by James McGarvey. We have 2 new members—both play guitar/bass and we are happy to have them.
• Local Performance   Since most of the competitions are far away, Mr. Poole is trying to make arrangements to perform locally. He is also working on arranging an assembly for SMS students for recruitment purposes.

Nominating Committee

         We already have one member, Donette Yeilding…………….ok, make that 2!  Thank you, Bethany Meyer, for stepping up to help Donette.  We still need one more member.  By the March meeting we need a slate of nominees.

8^th grade Curriculum Fair, SHS on Thurs, Feb.19.  The jazz band will perform. Mr. Poole will ask Janice Eason about a recruitment video.

Marching Band 

§  The practice schedule will be a little different this year with an emphasis on accommodating sports and other school activities.

§  The seniors will be encouraging freshmen and sophomores to reconsider joining.

§   A new uniform is being proposed—we are hoping to have it for the 2010 season. 

§  It is time to register for classes for next year.  Schedule requests are due 2/24 for high school students.  We need to know who and how many marching members we have so we can plan the show.

Jazz Fest   There will be a meeting immediately following this meeting.  Anyone interested in participating (we need you!) can contact Lynne Hood.

Band Banquet/Awards Ceremony   May 15, 6:00pm   We’d like the students to plan this.  A band of our own musicians will perform.  They are looking for a drummer.

York Revolution   It was agreed by most in attendance that we will not work the concessions stand this year. It was a lot of work for a lot of people and the Revolution would like this year’s volunteer groups to commit to 5 games.  We could not cover 5 games.  However most also agreed that we’d like to perform the National Anthem again and sell a block of tickets.  Bethany Meyer offered to contact the York Revolution to start the process.  Lynne Hood will forward contact information to her.

Symphonic Band  It was suggested that we provide more support for the symphonic band as we do so much for the marching and jazz bands and indoor groups. Ideas:  fun evening for them? There is a motorcycle club which has a hall we might be able to look into for an evening social event.  The Soltes’ might be able to look into it if we decide to proceed. Dinner before a concert? The dinner that the orchestra parent group provided before the orchestra concert went well. It was suggested that if we do a dinner, advertise more and directly to parents.  We do provide refreshments for the concerts and Mr. Poole does not feel that the symphonic band students feel unsupported.

Steger Scholarship 

§  Applications for this year’s scholarship need to go out soon.  Mr. Poole and Donette Yeilding will get that process going. 

§  The application deadline will be on or about March 24.

§  We are still working on getting the scholarship endowed—we’re getting close. We need to continue raising money for this. There should be a donation jar at all band-related events.

Disney Trip DVD  You are not too late to order your dvd of the trip for only $5.00.
