Director’s report
- Menchey Music step-up program: Representatives from
Menchey Music will be in the SHS band room on Wed, Feb. 27
from 6-8p.m. with intermediate and professional instruments. Students will
be allowed to try instruments and representatives will be available to
answer questions. Please plan to attend.
- Thank you for providing refreshments for the winter
concert. The concert is playing on channel 99.
- Picture day is tomorrow (Tues. Feb.5)—please remember
concert clothes.
- Small ensembles are organizing for a concert in the
spring.
- Mr. Levi invites all students interested in playing in
the pit for the musical to a meeting on Wed, Feb. 6 after school.
- Trip proposals: several ideas and sample itineraries
were submitted and discussed, information attached. One proposal is for a
trip with Bowl Games of America in Orlando, Dec. 26-31, 2009, and would
include the Champs Sports Bowl half-time performance (mass band
performance), a parade and Universal Studios. This trip would include
marching students only. Another proposal is for a spring trip, also to
Orlando, and would include a parade in Universal Studios.
- Discussion points: a winter trip would not require
any missed school days.
- Winter trip would not conflict with spring sports,
most winter sports practice, but do not play, over the winter holidays.
- Marching band only-- this is not what our
students are used to, may take some adjusting, would come as a surprise
to some seniors.
- Winter trip could present weather-related problems
and family conflicts.
- Most family conflicts could be avoided with ample
advance notice.
- Suggestion: alternate a marching-only trip with a
music department trip every other year.
- We need to get the kids’ started on fundraising
for the trip soon.
- Mr. Poole would like to hear your comments.
Mr. Poole handed out a calendar of all band events for
the month. The calendar will be posted in the band room. Suggestions were made
to post it on
www.warriorbands.org, and to print a large one like the athletic events
calendar. Mr. Poole will ask Mr. Abbott about the large calendar.
Fundraising
- Basket Bingo Very successful. We earned
about $4400.00 after expenses, about $1400 more than last year. The raffle
alone raised $900.00 . Debbie Auburger knows the Longaberger
consultant—should we buy baskets throughout the year as they go on sale?
Question deferred to fundraising committee. Debbie will send thank you
notes. Most proceeds going to Steger scholarship fund.
- Market Day next order deadline Wed. Feb. 6,
delivery on Tues. 2/12
- Pellman’s Cakes and Pies Chairs: Michelle
Spurlock and Jeannine Williams. Sale will run 2/14-3/7; pies and cakes will
arrive in time for Easter.
- Trip fundraisers Eighth graders will be
given the opportunity to raise funds for the trip. We need to get started
ASAP, especially if the trip is scheduled for Dec.
Old and Ongoing Business
- Nominating Committee Nominees for board
positions will be presented at the next meeting. We would really like to
have a man on the board.
- Committee meeting on 2/6/08, Pat Macomber’s house.
- SHS, SMS, William Penn High School, York Suburban
and Sudbrook Middle School are all registered.
- Tables are reserved; tablecloths are in the
uniform closet.
- Ticket prices are $4/students, $6/seniors,
$8/adults, same as last year.
- Food prices rose slightly to $1/drinks,
$2.50/desserts. This could get confusing with the food tickets, which
were usually $1/each. Bethany Meyer suggested using Mardi gras coins or
wooden nickels, which will be sold for .50/each, instead of tickets.
Great idea, Bethany!
- Bonny Lutter will handle the silent auction
with the art department.
- Bonny Lutter will get letters about program
ads together.
- Ads due by 3/12/08
- Donette Yeilding will make banners for all
bands.
- We have Shrewsbury Elementary reserved from 4-7 on
Fri. 4/4, the tables will be delivered at this time and we need help to
set up.
- We will also reserve Shrewsbury El. from 1-11 on
Sat. 4/5 and we will need help for set-up and decorating.
- We need help in the kitchen. In particular we
need someone who would be willing to “shadow” Bethany Meyer and learn
the job and take over next year.
- Derek White has been asked to get the bios
from the seniors.
- Pat Macomber will email images to Bethany
Meyer for the program cover.
New Business
- Audit committee We are looking for volunteers
to form an audit committee and do an annual audit of our books. Please
contact Donette Yeilding if you are willing to help with this one-time job.
- Awards Night/Banquet May 16 Bethany Meyer
will check with Grace United Methodist Church to see if we can use their
facility again. We need to get the kids started on planning for this
event. Idea: get a church youth group or other group that would like to
raise funds to make and serve the dinner, thereby freeing our band parents
to enjoy the evening. Is there a group in our school who would like to raise
funds? In the event that we can’t get Grace, St. John’s Lutheran and St.
John’s Catholic churches were recommended.
- Marching Season preview We need a date for
this. Mr. Poole will work on securing a date.
- Eighth grade parent meeting Do we want to
combine these events? Or get the eighth parents on the regular eighth grade
orientation night?
Next meeting: Monday, March 3, 2008 in the SHS band
room, 7p.m.
