§    Any parent needing the balance of their student’s account is welcome to email Angela Mays at darmays@yahoo.com

§  No –hassle fundraiser packets are going out to all symphonic band students soon. (Thank you, Donette!) Let’s send a reminder to marching students as well to remind them that this is ongoing and they can still participate or add to their accounts.

Director’s Report:  We had 8 students audition for district band, 4 were selected (Kelly Helfrich, Brook Silverman, Matt Schriver and John Kirby). We are very proud of everyone who participated. Matt Schriver was selected to re-audition for district orchestra and he will be the first chair mallet percussionist in the district orchestra. The district band will perform in Feb. at Dover High and regional band will perform at Gettysburg High School this year.

§  Jazz Band performed at the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremonies in New Freedom and Shrewsbury. The band sounded better the second time.

§   There will be a Spring trip—mailing to go out soon.  It will be a one-day trip to NYC on May 21, 2010. We’ll take bag lunches from the cafeteria to eat on the bus, kids can choose from one of 3 shows to see and we will return the same evening. The kids will have some free time---we will need chaperones. This is full departmental trip. It will be close to, but not more than, $100.00 per student—details to come.  A $25 deposit will be requested in Jan.

Immediate Needs:

§    Elementary Concert on Wed, Dec 9 and SMS concert Thurs, Dec. 17—we need to serve refreshments. Do we want to buy cookies or ask for donations? People have been very generous with food donations for marching band.  Kim Nace offered to call parents to ask for donations for both evenings. Donette will handle the tables and tablecloths.  SMS specifically requested hot chocolate.

§  Marching Uniforms:  A reminder will be sent to get the uniforms dry-cleaned and returned. Return date: January concert   (Jan. 26, 2010 )

Upcoming Events:

Battle of the Bands    January 9, 2010  6:00, doors open at 5:30. Coming very soon—we have 5 bands booked. We need to get info to the bands very soon. Four of the bands have participated in similar events.

§  Brian Furio will be the MC.

§  Security:  Mr. Poole will work with Randy Buffington on security.

§  Will need people to tally audience members as to which band they came to see.  We could rip off a corner of the tix and drop in a specific bucket or tally as they enter.

§  Advertising:  Do the bands need flyers?  Yes—let’s get some up and running now.  Kelly Silva will circulate flyers to the other bands.

§  Tix prices: $6 students/seniors   $8 adults

We are very excited to have the Towson colorguard perform and work with our guard.

New Business:

§  Janice will have the marching band DVD finished soon and ready to sale for about $5. This makes a nice gift.

§  Grades for band students: new this year, much more of a focus on fundamentals, etudes, rhythmic studies. They will work at grade levels. The expectations have been made clear to the students. They have been given a packet of everything they need to accomplish this year. Students can come in during other band sectionals—it doesn’t have to be their own section every time. We’re trying hard to increase technical skills with the instruments.

PLEASE JOIN US FOR THE NEXT MEETING ON MON, JAN 4, 7PM, SHS BAND ROOM.
