Director’s report
§ Chris Poole reported a great first day of band camp. It was very hot but there were no complaints. He will be careful to encourage students to drink plenty of water and reapply sunscreen. Water will be available out on the practice field. They started setting and playing drill today. The goal is to be marching and playing the opener by Friday, and to have the whole show learned by the end of band camp.
§ The band owes Grim’s Trophy $16.72 as per James McGarvey. Chris Poole will ask Mr. McGarvey for the invoice and give it to Donna Schriver.
§ Staff salaries—boosters must cover two salaries. Donette says they are already in the budget.
Fundraising
Old Business
§ Steger Scholarship Donette Yeilding will get the current figure for us. We still need to solicit a few businesses and put out a PSA—this is a work in progress. We need $10,000 for an endowed scholarship.
§ By-laws Lorna Deibert and Pat Macomber have been working on revising the by-laws all summer. Anyone is welcome to forward suggestions to Lorna or Pat via e-mail. The current draft is attached.
§ Non-profit status No updates at this time. Donna Schriver is working on this. Chris Poole suggests that we persist, as he has been involved in the process before and found it to be relatively quick and inexpensive.
§ Band Camp
· We still need people to donate freezy pops. Please contact Bethany Meyer if you can help.
· Leadership Lunch Pat Macomber will conduct leadership training at a Leadership Lunch on the first day of band camp.
· Leadership Camp Pat Macomber and Bonny Lutter observed at Westchester University. Both agreed the leadership training was fantastic—well worth the money. They would encourage the color guard to send a representative. They suggest that we consider earmarking some money to help defray the cost for more families in the future. The cost this year was $415.
New Business
§ Freshman parent/liaison/mentor/buddy system……..Pat Macomber will handle this.
§ Chaperones Bethany Meyer will organize a meeting for chaperones next week.
§ Band Night Oct. 5 The athletic department allows the band to pre-sell game tickets and keep the proceeds from those tickets for this game. There will be a tailgate party for band families before the game. James McGarvey would like us to include elementary students this year. The SMS band students are invited to march with the SHS band. Chris Poole would like to see the SMS students wear matching shirts. He will talk to Mr. Quay about this . Lorna Deibert would like to distribute fliers for our Chik-Fil-A night on band night.
§ End-of-season-party for the marching band Scheduled for Nov. 16 at Springfield Bowling. We need volunteers for this.
§ Calendar Clarification It is still not clear whether the first game is Fri. Aug. 31 or Sat. Sept. 1. Chris Poole will check into this.
§ Cameras at band camp Bethany Meyer will get one camera for each section and bring to camp as soon as possible. The kids have fun with them and the pictures come in handy for the banquet.
Next meeting: Sept. 10, 2007 SHS band room—parents of all band students are welcome and encouraged to attend.
